Imagine a typical energetic little boy, full of life and eager to explore the world. Now imagine him being struck by a horrific disease that results in severe muscle degeneration, trouble walking and breathing and an early death. This happened to Michael Capolongo and his family.
Michael’s Cause was founded by Robert and Theresa Capolongo after their son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). It is the leading fatal genetic disorder worldwide, passed from mother to son. Because it is a degenerative disease that attacks the muscles, leg braces are usually needed by age 10, and most victims are wheelchair-bound by their 12th birthday. The life expectancy of afflicted patients is late teens to early 20s and is 100 percent fatal. The official mission of Michael’s Cause is to “raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy as well as direct funding for research by building a strong foundation for future treatments and a possible cure.” Robert and Theresa have a more personal goal. “Our goal is to save our son’s life and the many thousands of boys afflicted with this fatal disease.”
On Saturday evening March 21, Michael’s Cause is hosting the Somewhere Over the Rainbow 4th Annual Dinner Dance in Staten Island, NY. This year’s event is sure to be another success. “The venue is sold out!” Robert Capolongo said, with excitement. The evening includes a delicious dinner with cocktails, a photobooth, 50/50, a silent auction, a raffle and lots of dancing.
“We give gift bags to everyone who attends as a way of thanking people for attending the dinner dance. A few years ago, Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen donated samples of its products to be included in the gift bags. Everybody loved it, and we are grateful that Blue Lizard has continued to support our cause,” said Robert. “The gift bags help us say thank you and lets us give something back to all the people who support our organization.”
Michael’s Cause has been involved in many events over the past few years and many organizations have contributed to the cause. Robert Capolongo commented, “In addition to support from family and friends, we are humbled and grateful to the outsiders who have offered to help with this event.”
