Prepare to Scare at the Crimson Screen Horror Film Fest

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen® has teamed up with the Crimson Screen Horror Film Fest in Charleston, SC to provide filmmakers and participants with samples of sunscreen so the scariest things they’ll see will be on the screen and not on their skin!

This marks the second year for the Crimson Screen Horror Film Fest, a three-day showcase featuring the best in independent horror films from all over the world. This year’s festival will be held May 15-17 in Sterett Hall Auditorium in North Charleston, and will feature a total of 43 films, including 11 feature-length films and 32 shorts. Blue Lizard Sunscreen will also have two commercials airing between films that keep with the horror movie theme.

Audiences will face zombies, malevolent spirits, slashers, snakes and vampires, just to name a few. Cannibalism is another theme that gets explored in the world premier feature film by Scream Queen and horror movie legend, Debbie Rochon, in her directorial debut. Model Hunger tells the story of an aging supermodel that lures young models to her house for revenge against an industry that cast her aside. Rochon will also make a personal appearance at the festival and sign autographs.

Another special guest will be Tony Rosen, special effects make-up artist and the designer of the creepy Annabelle doll for the movies The Conjuring and Annabelle. Rosen also designed the festival’s award trophies that will be given out to winning film entries. Annabelle herself may even make an appearance at the festival.

“We showcase all types of films in every category of horror,” said Tommy Faircloth, filmmaker and festival organizer. “We’ve got everything from zombie movies to slasher films to psychological thrillers. We have filmmakers who’ve submitted entries from all over the world, including one from Japan, as well as films from local S.C. filmmakers in our ‘Homegrown Horror’ category. We also give out awards in several categories and winners of the Best Short Film will have an opportunity for a potential distribution deal with ShortsHD. All short film Official Selections will have the chance for a world-wide broadcast deal with ShortsTV.”

Festival-goers are encouraged to dress in costume and Cosplay, but for those that aren’t decked out in their scariest stage make-up, Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen has them protected.

A Fast-Paced Drag Race in the Charleston Harbor

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen is excited to be a part of the Fort2Battery Race in Charleston, SC on April 11. Read more about this unique and exciting event in today's blog.

Imagine kite boards, ultra-high-performance catamarans, windsurfers and hydrofoil Moths all sailing together in beautiful South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor on a glorious spring day. Add to it the excitement of speed and competition, and you have a drag race, specifically the Fort2Battery Race. This 3.8 mile drag race is in its second year and is the largest of its type in the U. S. The roster is full this year with more than 70 participants. As one of the sponsors, Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen will protect the racers from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. By providing individual packs of sunscreen to the participants and the race committee team, Blue Lizard will take away the worry of sunburn and skin damage and let the racers concentrate on getting over the finish line.

Tim Fitzgerald, the founder and coordinator of the Fort2Battery Race, has a strong allegiance to Blue Lizard Sunscreen. After being hired to do outside work, he consulted a friend who is knowledgeable about sunscreens to find the best option to protect his skin in his new job. His friend recommended Blue Lizard and Fitzgerald was amazed at how well it worked. He suffered no ill effects from the sun during the entire time he was on the job. When planning his new event, Fitzgerald wanted to encourage racers to protect their skin. He immediately thought of Blue Lizard. “It was the only phone call I made to a sunscreen company and I was delighted when they agreed to become a sponsor,” Fitzgerald said. “There is always the possibility during the race that people will get dumped into the water. One great thing about Blue Lizard is its water resistance. Very important in a drag race!”

The Fort2Battery Race is the brainchild of Fitzgerald. Although the race only lasts 15 minutes, it is quite a sight to see. This is the only drag race where kite boards and hydrofoil Moths compete. For all of you out there new to this sport, a hydrofoil Moth is a dinghy that flies above the water rather than floating on it. As its speed increases, the hull is actually lifted out of the water, reducing drag and making the boat capable of going twice the speed of the wind.

On Saturday, April 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. (if the wind cooperates!) you could witness expert-level racers going more than 30mph, each clad in crash helmets and impact vests. It is a beautiful, exciting, chaotic event enjoyed by people of all ages. If you can’t be there in person, catch the live stream via Sailing Anarchy.

After the race, all participants join the fun at the awards party with drinks provided by Palmetto Brewery. The awards range from the serious, such as overall winner and placing in your individual craft, to the prestigious Most Stylish Finish (costume, wipeout, etc.). A new part of the event this year is the auction. Local businesses have been generous with their donations and the proceeds will benefit the Charleston Youth Kite boarders (https://www.facebook.com/Charlestonyouthkiteboarding?fref=ts)and the kite boarding team at the University of Charleston.

The Lizard to Race in Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC on March 28

Have you ever seen a Blue Lizard run a 10K? You’ll get a chance when the Blue Lizard dons his running gear and tackles the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC on March 28.

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen is excited to be a sponsor of the 2015 Cooper River Bridge Run. The 10K race, now in its 38th year, begins in the Charleston suburb of Mt. Pleasant, proceeds over the famous Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge and ends in historic downtown Charleston at Marion Square.

The Cooper River Bridge Run began in 1978 when Dr. Marcus Newberry of MUSC was inspired by a running track constructed by Bonnie Bell Cosmetics to encourage their employees to run and stay fit. He wanted to get the Charleston community involved in running and fitness and thought a run across the bridge would do it. He partnered with Terry Hamlin, then president of the Charleston Running Club, and set up a committee with representatives from notable Charleston colleges and businesses and organized the first race with 340 runners. Today, the race has more than 50,000 participants and is the largest race in the Carolinas. It is now also one of the largest 10k races in the U.S.

For the first time, Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen is a sponsor of the Cooper River Bridge Run and will have an exhibit booth at the race Expo on March 26 from noon to 8 p.m. and on March 27 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., where we will be selling products and giving away free samples. On race day, Saturday, March 28, Blue Lizard will also be on site at the race where staff will hand out sunscreen samples and have gallons of sunscreen on hand for runners to use.

Our Blue Lizard mascot will run the race along with Jeff Bedard, Crown Laboratories founder and CEO, Gaylord VanGuilder, Crown Laboratories vice president of commercial operations, and the eight winners of our Cooper River Bridge Run Facebook contest. They all will be sporting their Blue Lizard gear as they climb the bridge and run towards downtown Charleston.

You also won’t want to miss the excitement as members of Team Fastrax, a professional skydiving team, drop into the race with their official Blue Lizard parachute!

If you are running the race or live in Charleston, SC, be sure to stop by and visit the Blue Lizard booth at the Cooper River Bridge Run.
